History

Tanakaguchi Station opened on 15 June 1924 on the Santō Light Railway between today's Wakayama Station (then Higashi-Wakayama) and Nichizengū (then Akizuki). The station owed its existence to the Kisei West Line's arrival at the new Higashi-Wakayama Station, which prompted the light railway to reroute its tracks to that junction; the abandoned segment had left the area around the former Ōhashi Station without a station, and residents petitioned for a replacement, giving rise to Tanakaguchi. Subsequent operators were Santō Railway (1929), Wakayama Railway (1931), Wakayama Electric Tramway (1957) and Nankai Electric Railway (1961), with the line transferred to today's Wakayama Electric Railway on 1 April 2006. The wooden station building survived into the 1990s before being demolished.

Notes

Tanaka-chō, the neighbourhood that gives Tanakaguchi its name, lies only about 300 m north-east of the station — but the station is itself just 600 m from Wakayama Station, so reaching Tanaka-chō on foot from the far busier junction covers much the same distance.
