History
Nichizengū Station opened as "Akizuki Station" on 15 February 1916, to coincide with the opening of the Santō Light Railway's line between Ōhashi Station and Santō Station (now Itakiso Station). On 28 February 1922, with the opening of Higashi-Wakayama Station (now Wakayama Station) on the Kisei West Line, the line was extended between this station and Higashi-Wakayama Station, and the section between this station and Nakanoshima Station was abolished. It was renamed "Nichizengū Station" in 1933, and subsequently, through company name changes and mergers, it passed successively through the Santō Railway, the Wakayama Railway, Wakayama Electric Tramway, and the Nankai Electric Railway's Kishigawa Line, before passing to the Wakayama Electric Railway (Wakayama Denki Tetsudō) on 1 April 2006. It became unstaffed on 1 October 2000. It is located in Arie, Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture, station number 03.
Notes
The station is the nearest stop to Hinokuma-jingū and Kunikakasu-jingū shrines (together known as Nichizengū), known as the ichinomiya (chief shrine) of the former Kii Province, and its name is also taken from these two shrines.
