Location
History
Wakayama Station opened on 28 February 1924 as Higashi-Wakayama Station, when the government railways opened the first section of the Kisei West Line, from the original Wakayama Station (now Kiwa) through the new station to Minoshima. The same day the Santō Light Railway, predecessor of the Wakayama Electric Railway Kishigawa Line, extended its tracks here, so the station was a two-line junction from the outset. In June 1930 the Hanwa Electric Railway opened its line from Izumi-Fuchū to an adjoining Hanwa-Higashi-Wakayama Station, renamed Nankai Higashi-Wakayama after Nankai absorbed that company in 1940; the wartime nationalisation of 1 May 1944 merged it into the state-run Higashi-Wakayama Station, whose line became the Hanwa Line. The station was renamed Wakayama on 1 March 1968 — a month after the previous holder of the name became Kiwa — and a station department store opened on 31 March that year. JR West took over at the 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways.
Notes
There is no platform 6 at Wakayama. The unplatformed track that once lay between tracks 5 and 7 was taken out and the remaining tracks were renumbered — old track 7 became track 6 and old track 8 became track 7 — but the renumbering happened only on the rails: the boarding points are still announced as platforms 7 and 8, so platform and track numbers no longer agree.
