History
Shōtenkyō Station opened on 10 August 1932 as Tango-Kōno Station, with the opening of the Tango-Kizu (now Yūhigaura-Kizu-Onsen) to Kumihama section, the final section of the Miyazu Line to open. Freight handling ended in 1962 and parcel handling in 1984, and the station became unstaffed from 1985. It passed to JR West with the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987, and the Miyazu Line was transferred to the Kita Kinki Tango Railway on 1 April 1990. With a further transfer to WILLER TRAINS on 1 April 2015 it became a station on the Kyoto Tango Railway's Miyatoyo Line, and at the same time its name was changed to the current Shōtenkyō. In 2014, Kyōtango City selected the nickname "Himanomatsubara Shōtenkyō Station" through public submission.
Notes
Shōtenkyō, the scenic spot the station is named after, lies about 2.5 kilometers away; Food Shop Miuraya, a private store on the rotary in front of the station, rents out the "Kumiichi" bicycles used to circle Kumihama Bay.
