History

Kabutoyama Station opened on 1 March 1962 as Kōyama Station, between Tango-Kōno (now Shōtenkyō) and Kumihama stations on Japanese National Railways' Miyazu Line. It was an unstaffed, passenger-only station from the outset, and passed to JR West with the division and privatization of JNR in 1987. It became a station of the Kita Kinki Tango Railway when the Miyazu Line was transferred to that company on 1 April 1990, and, with the further transfer to WILLER TRAINS on 1 April 2015, became a station on the Miyatoyo Line and was renamed to its current name, Kabutoyama. It is the only station on the Miyazu Line without a station building, a ground-level halt with a single side platform serving one track, set slightly higher than the road on the seaward side.

Notes

In 2014, Kyōtango City's station-nickname selection committee chose, through public submission, the nickname "Masu-no-Iratsume no Sato Kabutoyama Station"; Kabuto-yama, the mountain the station is named after, lies to its north.
