History

Satsuma-Shioya Station opened on 31 October 1963 in the Shioya district of Chiran-chō, now part of Minamikyūshū, as one of the stops added the day the JNR Ibusuki Line was extended to Makurazaki and renamed the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line. It opened unstaffed and passenger-only with a single side platform and one track, and it has no station building. The site was laid out so that a passing loop could be added later if traffic warranted; today one track serves the platform, while a second, stub-ended track survives as a siding for stabling maintenance machinery, joined to the running line by a point at the Makurazaki end. Control of the stop transferred to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987 at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways.
