Location
History
The station opened on 1 May 1886 as Ichinomiya Station, an early stop on the Tōkaidō Main Line of the government railways. Its main building collapsed in the 1891 Nōbi earthquake, and in 1916 the station was renamed Owari-Ichinomiya to disambiguate it from three other Ichinomiya stations across Japan; the spelling was tidied to its present form in 1952. A three-storey reinforced-concrete "people's station" building opened in 1951 and stood until it was demolished in 2007, while the tracks were raised above the city in stages, the up line in October 1988 and the down line in November 1990. Operation passed to JR Central at the 1987 privatisation. The i-Building complex in front of the station, which includes a public concourse, opened on 1 November 2012, and the municipal central library opened inside it in January 2013.
Notes
JR Central's first female stationmaster took up her post here on 1 July 2009.
