History

Koyaura Station opened as a new station on 1 May 1914, between Ten'nō and Saka stations on the Kure Line of the Railway Agency (Tetsudōin). It began handling carload freight to and from a private siding on 25 June 1949, but freight handling was discontinued on 1 October 1965, and on 1 October 1970 station operations were contracted out and baggage handling was discontinued as well. It became a station of West Japan Railway Company (JR West) at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, with station number JR-Y08. Demolition of the first-generation station building began on 10 December 1998, and the second-generation building was completed on 13 March 1999. Simplified automatic ticket gates compatible with ICOCA were installed on 23 June 2007, and ICOCA became usable from 1 September of that year. The station became unstaffed on 28 January 2017. It was temporarily closed during the July 2018 torrential rain disaster, and service resumed between Hiro and Saka stations on 9 September of that year.

Notes

When the station building was rebuilt in 1999, the original building, which had covered about 176 m², was reduced to about 46 m². The resulting 130 m² of freed land was developed as a bicycle parking area to eliminate disorderly bicycle parking.
