History
Kure-Portopia Station was newly built between Ten'nō and Koyaura stations on the Kure Line on 19 March 1992, the day before Kure Portopia Land opened, for the convenience of the park's visitors. The total construction cost of 240 million yen was borne entirely by the park. At opening, the special rapid service "Kure Portopia Land-gō" ran to and from Tokuyama and Fukuyama stations. When closure of the park was decided in 1998, abolition of the station was also discussed, but it was retained because of substantial use by local residents. ICOCA became usable from 1 September 2007, and the station has been unstaffed since 1 April 2021. It is located in Ten'nō-dentōbara-chō, Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, on West Japan Railway Company's Kure Line, station number JR-Y09.
Notes
Kure-Portopia opened a day ahead of the Kure Portopia Land amusement park in 1992; the park covered the full 240-million-yen construction cost. The park closed in 1998 but the station outlived it, now serving the free Kure Portopia Park that replaced the rides in 2000.
