History
Kita-Otari Station opened on 15 August 1957 as a Japanese National Railways station, when the Ōito Line's Nakatsuchi–Kotaki section opened. Freight and parcel handling were withdrawn year-round in December 1973, when the station also became unstaffed year-round. It passed to JR West on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of JNR. In July 1995 a torrential-rain disaster sent debris flows into the station yard, burying it, and restoration work ran for two years and four months. The 2014 Nagano-ken Kamishiro Fault earthquake forced another temporary suspension of services between Shinano-Ōmachi and Itoigawa.
