History

Hiraiwa Station opened on 15 August 1957 as a station handling both passengers and freight, at what is now Hiraiwa, Ōdokoro, Itoigawa, Niigata Prefecture, with the extension of the Japanese National Railways Ōito Line between Nakatsuchi and Kotaki. Freight handling ended on 20 November 1981 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984. It became a station of West Japan Railway Company (JR West) at the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. The 7.11 flood disaster of July 1995 washed away the station yard and the Himekawa Bridge, and the full line was restored in November 1997. The station became unstaffed on 23 March 2002, and in June a local resident working at the Hiraiwa simplified post office was appointed "town stationmaster." The station was again temporarily out of service after the 2014 Nagano Prefecture Kamishiro Fault earthquake.

Notes

Although the station is located in Itoigawa, Niigata Prefecture, a wired broadcast telephone belonging to Otari Village, Nagano Prefecture, is installed inside the station building. Crossing the Himekawa River brings one immediately to Himekawa Onsen on the Nagano side.
