History

Kii-Ichigi Station opened on 8 August 1940 as a stop on the Japanese Government Railways' Kisei-Nishi Line, added when the route was extended between Shingū and Kii-Kimoto (today Kumano-shi). The Kisei-Nishi Line was absorbed into the Kisei Main Line in the line-naming revision of 15 July 1959. Freight handling ended on 15 October 1972, and the station has been unstaffed since 21 December 1983. Operation passed to JR Central on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways. Demolition and rebuilding of the original station building began in late November 2015, and in February 2016 it was replaced by the simpler waiting-room structure the station retains today.

Notes

The station stands much higher than the national highway and than the Shimoichigi settlement it serves, which lies further inland; from the station forecourt the whole spread of Shimoichigi can be taken in at a glance.
