History

Kōshiyama Station opened on 8 August 1940 as an intermediate stop when Japanese Government Railways opened the Kisei-Nishi Line extension between Shingū and Kii-Kimoto (now Kumano-shi). The Kisei-Nishi Line was absorbed into the Kisei Main Line in the line-naming revision of 15 July 1959. Freight handling was discontinued in 1973, and the station has been unattended since December 1983, when parcel handling also ceased. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, operation passed to JR Central, and it remains an unstaffed station managed from Kumano-shi Station.

Notes

The wooden, hip-and-gable station building from 1940 still stands; passengers waiting inside can still see the shuttered ticket window and parcel counter preserved from when Kōshiyama was a staffed station.
