History

Kami-Kumamoto Station opened on 1 July 1891 as Ikeda Station, a Kyushu Railway stop in what was then Ikeda Village. It was renamed Kami-Kumamoto on 1 January 1901, anticipating Ikeda's absorption into the city of Kumamoto, which finally came in 1921. Nationalisation followed on 1 July 1907. Kikuchi Kidō, the forerunner of Kumamoto Electric Railway, opened its own station alongside on 1 October 1911, on what is today the Kikuchi Line, and the Kumamoto City Tram added a stop in front of the station in 1935. JR Kyushu took over the JR portion at the 1987 privatisation. Grade separation of the Kagoshima Main Line, undertaken in connection with the Kyushu Shinkansen, was partly completed on 14 March 2015, when the present fourth-generation elevated station building, designed by Eiji Mitooka, entered service.

Notes

The façade of the much-admired second-generation station building of 1913 was preserved when the line was elevated, and it now fronts the adjacent Kumamoto City Tram stop.
