Location

History

The station opened on 21 January 1887 as Kanō Station on the government-built Tōkaidō line, primarily handling freight; it was renamed Gifu Station on 15 December 1888 when passenger service began. The station was relocated west in 1889 and to its present site on 22 July 1913, using the relocated former Aichi Station building, which burned down in 1945 wartime air raids. A two-storey reinforced-concrete minshū-eki station building was completed on 1 April 1959. Elevation works on the Tōkaidō and Takayama lines were carried out between 1986 and 1996, with the present elevated station completed on 2 March 1997 alongside the Asty Gifu commercial complex.

Notes

Because the elevated lines had to clear the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line viaduct that crosses them, Gifu's platforms sit at a height comparable to a third-storey building.
