Location
History
Nishi-Gifu Station opened on 1 November 1986 as an infill stop on the Tōkaidō Main Line between Gifu and Hozumi, in the last months of Japanese National Railways operation. It passed to JR Central at privatisation on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates entered service on 11 November 1995, and from the 4 December 1999 timetable revision all rapid-class trains began calling here. The TOICA IC card became usable on 25 November 2006. The JR ticket office closed on 31 January 2024 and was replaced the next day by an assisted reserved-seat ticket machine, the station becoming unstaffed under JR Central's customer support service.
Notes
Before the 4 December 1999 timetable revision no Special Rapid or Rapid service stopped at Nishi-Gifu — local trains then began and ended their runs at Ōgaki, and the only rapid-class train to call was the down-direction overnight rapid Moonlight Nagara. From that revision every rapid-class service has stopped here.
