History
Chikuzen-Iwaya Station opened on 15 March 1956 with the extension of the Hita Line between Hikosan and Daigyōji. It was consolidated into the Hita-Hikosan Line in 1960; parcel handling was abolished in 1971, leaving it unstaffed, and it became a JR Kyushu station at the 1987 JNR privatization. It was rebuilt in 1997 into the current single-story wooden station building modeled on Iwaya Shrine. In the July 2017 Northern Kyushu heavy rain, earth and debris flowed in and the rail line itself was suspended. From 28 August 2023 the BRT Hikoboshi Line began operating, restarting the station as a stop on a dedicated roadway with the rail bed removed.
Notes
Beside the station, spring water from the Hita-Hikosan Line's Shakadake Tunnel is piped in; after being selected in 2008 for the Ministry of the Environment's "100 Selected Waters of the Heisei Era," it has been supplied for a fee via an automatic dispenser since December 2009.
