History

Hikosan Station was established on 25 August 1942 by the Railway Ministry as a station on the Tagawa Line, with the line's extension from Nishi-Soeda Station to Hikosan Station. It is located at Ōaza Ochiai, Soeda-machi, Tagawa District, Fukuoka Prefecture. On 12 November 1945 the station building was partly destroyed in the Futamata Tunnel explosion accident. On 1 April 1960, with a section separation and consolidation, it came under the Hita-Hikosan Line; it became unstaffed on 15 February 1984, and was inherited by Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) at the JNR privatization of 1 April 1987. It was suspended on 5 July 2017 owing to the July 2017 Northern Kyushu heavy rain, and demolition of the old station building began on 19 April 2021. On 28 August 2023 the Hita-Hikosan Line BRT, the "BRT Hikoboshi Line," opened, and boarding points on a dedicated roadway built after removing the rail bed and platforms now serve as the station.

Notes

The original 1942 wooden station building, modelled on Hikosan Jingū shrine and finished with red pillars to befit a gateway to the sacred Mount Hiko, was demolished in 2021 after the heavy-rain shutdown; from 1994 a woman potter ran a studio, gallery and tearoom in its former office space and sold tickets there on commission, keeping the building in use in its later years.
