History
Daigyōji Station opened on 20 September 1946 as a terminal station with the Hikosan Line's extension between Hōshuyama and Daigyōji. It was consolidated into the Hita-Hikosan Line in 1960, became a commissioned-operation station in 1971, and became unstaffed in 1984; it was inherited by JR Kyushu at the 1987 JNR privatization. Simplified commission also ended in December 2001, leaving it fully unstaffed. In the Northern Kyushu heavy rain of 5 July 2017, a landslide caused the station building to collapse and the station was suspended; restoration of the building was completed on 22 December 2019. From 28 August 2023 the BRT Hikoboshi Line began operating there as a stop on the dedicated roadway with the rail bed removed.
Notes
The name signboard on the restored station building was calligraphed by the 41st tategyōji (chief sumo referee) Shikimori Inosuke (later the 38th Kimura Shōnosuke), in reference to the station name "Daigyōji"; figures from professional sumo including stablemaster Shibatayama (former yokozuna Ōnokuni) attended the ceremony.
