History
Asagiri Station opened on the Ministry of Railways' Yunomae Line on 30 March 1924 under the name "Menda Station." It was transferred to Japanese National Railways in 1949, and freight handling ended in 1980 and baggage handling in 1984. It was inherited by JR Kyushu at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and became a Kuma River Railway Yunomae Line station with the third-sector conversion of 1 October 1989. In October 1999 a combined station building shared with the Asagiri-machi Commerce and Community Center "Poppo-kan" was completed, integrating the station with the community facility. On 1 April 2009 it was renamed to its present name, "Asagiri Station," to match the town's name.
Notes
It is the only staffed station on the Kuma River Railway equipped with a passing loop, and the exchange of tablet tokens still takes place there today.
