History

Asa Station opened on 3 December 1900 as the terminus of the Sanyo Railway's extension from Mitajiri (present-day Hōfu), beginning passenger and freight handling. It became a through-station with the extension to Bakan (present-day Shimonoseki) Station on 27 May 1901. A branch line to Ōmine Station (present-day Mine Line) opened on 13 September 1905, and the station came under the Sanyo Main Line following the Sanyo Railway's nationalization in 1906 and the 1909 line-name designation. Freight handling ended on 21 January 1984, after which the station became a stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen on 13 March 1999, making it the newest station on the Sanyo Shinkansen. It became a station of JR West and JR Freight at the 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways.

Notes

Among San'yō Shinkansen stations, Asa is the only one that has never seen a regularly scheduled service other than Kodama call there since its 1999 opening; in fiscal 2014 a few seasonal Hikari and Sakura trains did stop.
