History

Yokoshiba Station opened on 1 June 1897 with the Sōbu Railway's Narutō–Chōshi extension, handling both passenger and freight traffic. In the steam era it served as a watering stop for locomotives, with correspondingly long scheduled halts. The Sōbu Railway was nationalised on 1 September 1907 and absorbed into the Sōbu Main Line under the 1909 line-name regulations. Freight handling ended on 1 July 1973 and the Sakura–Chōshi section was electrified the following year. JR East took over at the 1987 privatisation, and Shiosai limited express services stop here. The wooden hip-and-gable station building still in use today dates to 1897 (refurbished in 1998) and is, as of 2024, the oldest surviving station building in Chiba Prefecture.

Notes

The wooden hip-and-gable station building dates from the 1897 opening and is, as of 2024, the oldest surviving station building in Chiba Prefecture.
