History
Wakae-Iwata Station opened on 30 April 1914 as "Wakae Station" when the Osaka Electric Tramway's line opened. It was renamed "Wakae-Iwata Station" in 1925, became a station of the Kansai Express Railway through merger with the Sangū Express Electric Railway in March 1941, and became a station of Kintetsu (Kinki Nippon Railway) through corporate merger in June 1944. The IC card "PiTaPa" became usable in April 2007. With progress on a continuous grade-separation project, elevation work on the down track was completed on 30 May 2010 and on the up track on 21 September 2014. On 15 February 2017, a new ticket gate under the elevated structure, a north exit, and an escalator to the up platform entered service, and the temporary station building that had been in joint use since 2006 was closed.
Notes
The surrounding area is known as the place where Kimura Shigenari died in battle during the Siege of Osaka, and historical sites associated with him, such as his grave and Renjōji temple, along with various places bearing the Kimura name, are scattered around the station.
