History

Wadayama Station opened on 1 April 1906 as a terminus when the San'yō Railway extended its line between Nii Station and this station. It became a national railway station when the San'yō Railway was nationalized on 1 December of the same year, and the line was extended to Yōka Station on 1 July 1908. It was assigned to the Bantan Line under the line-naming system established in 1909, and incorporated into the San'in Main Line under the 1 March 1912 revision. The station building was destroyed by fire caused by an electrical short on 30 May 1943, and was rebuilt as the current building on 26 April 1976. It passed to JR West at the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987; a Midori no Kenbaiki Plus (green ticket machine) began operating on 14 February 2020, and the IC card "ICOCA" became usable from 13 March 2021. Its home line is the San'in Main Line, and it is also served by the Bantan Line, which terminates at Wadayama; it is the representative station of Asago City.

Notes

On the north side of the station grounds, the brick engine shed and water tower of the former Toyooka Locomotive Depot's Wadayama sub-depot, built in March 1912, still stand; since the sub-depot was abolished in 1991, they have been used as storage.
