History
Ushinoshima Station opened on 16 February 1899 under the privately run Tokushima Railway as an intermediate stop between Tokushima and Kamojima, in what is now Yoshinogawa, Tokushima Prefecture. The original spelling of the station name was "Ushi-no-shima" (牛ノ島), changed at an undocumented later date to today's "Ushinoshima" (牛島). The Tokushima Railway was nationalised on 1 September 1907, after which Japanese Government Railways and then JNR ran the station as part of the Tokushima Line. The station was destaffed on 1 April 1983, returned from contracted-out to direct operation on 1 March 1988, and was made fully unstaffed again on 1 September 2010. JR Shikoku has run the station since the 1987 privatisation.
Notes
The Tokushima Line was upgraded for higher-speed running only between Sako and Kamojima, which made Ushinoshima a "one-line through" station like Ishii: the platform 2 track takes through trains at up to 90 km/h, though local trains normally use platform 1 on the station-building side.
