History

Shimoura Station opened on 20 September 1934 as a stop for gasoline railcars only. It was temporarily suspended on 10 August 1941, then resumed operation on 1 November 1957 as an unstaffed station handling diesel-railcar passengers only. On 19 October 1969 a train collision and derailment accident occurred, killing one assistant engineer, and on 19 December of the same year another accident occurred when the express train 'Yoshinogawa 4' collided with a dump truck at the level crossing west of the station and derailed. It became a station on JR Shikoku's Tokushima Line at the 1 April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways. Its station number is B06.
