History

Ube opened on 1 July 1910 on the San'yō Main Line between Funaki (today's Kotō) and Onoda, handling passengers and freight from the start. The privately operated Ube Light Railway, renamed the Ube Railway in 1921, reached the city centre at Ube-Shinkawa in 1914 and was nationalised on 1 May 1943, at which point this station was renamed Nishi-Ube (西宇部駅) while Ube-Shinkawa — the old company's city-centre terminal, on what then became the Ube East Line — took over the 'Ube' name. Campaigning by the Ube Chamber of Commerce restored the original name here on 1 October 1964, the inner-city station having reverted to Ube-Shinkawa on 15 September that year. A new single-storey station building was completed in April 1986, and the 1 April 1987 JNR privatisation made this a joint JR West and JR Freight facility. The Midori-no-Madoguchi closed on 28 February 2021.

Notes

Before the Ube Railway was nationalised in 1943, Ube was one of the rare stations where three operators met — the state railway, the Ube Railway and the Funaki Railway, which began its line here. The Funaki Railway's line closed in 1961, after which the station was served by the national railway alone.
