History

Kotō Station opened on 3 December 1900 as 'Funaki Station,' simultaneously with the completion of the Sanyo Railway's line between Mitajiri (present-day Hōfu) and Asa. Following nationalization in December 1906 and incorporation into the Sanyo Main Line in October 1909, it was renamed Kotō Station in November 1916. Freight handling ended in September 1962. In October 1972, ahead of the completion of the Sanyo Shinkansen between Okayama and Hakata, it was relocated to its present site. Parcel handling ended in February 1984, and the station passed to JR West at the April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways. ICOCA use began in April 2023. It is an unstaffed station with a combined side-and-island platform layout of two platforms serving three tracks, with the station building beneath the elevated Sanyo Shinkansen structure.
