History

Tsuyama Station was established on 21 August 1923, when the state railway's Sakubi Line opened between Tsuyama and Mimasaka-Oiwake and between Tsuyama and Tsuyamaguchi. At the time it was located in Ōtani, Fukuoka village, Kume District, Okayama Prefecture; the station's name derives from the neighboring town of Tsuyama across the Yoshii River. After the Inbi South Line began running into the station in 1928, that line's renaming to the Inbi Line in 1932, and the Sakubi Line's incorporation into the Kishin Line in 1936, the Okayama–Tsuyamaguchi–Tsuyama section was renamed the Tsuyama Line on 1 June 1944. Freight handling ended in 1973 and parcel handling in 1985. It became a JR West station at the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. Barrier-free improvements were completed in March 2023, with an elevator installed and the footbridge returned to use. The Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket office closed in February 2024, and in September the station building's renovation was completed and ICOCA became usable on the Tsuyama Line.

Notes

The last train of the day into Tsuyama Station arrives at 12:29 a.m., the latest arrival time of any non-electrified line in Japan.
