History

Torahime Station opened as a newly built general-service station on 1 June 1902, on the government railway Hokuriku Line between Nagahama and Takatsuki stations. It became a station of the Hokuriku Main Line under the line-naming system established on 12 October 1909. Freight handling was abolished in 1971 and parcel handling in 1984. It became a station of JR West with the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. On 21 October 2006, with the DC electrification of the Tsuruga–Nagahama section, Shin-Kaisoku (New Rapid) trains began running into the station, the IC card ICOCA became usable, and platform raising was completed. The station building was renovated in a log-cabin style in 2006, and is now operated as a simple commissioned station by 'Machizukuri Torahime,' a designated manager appointed by Nagahama City.

Notes

Because the station's name contains the character for "tiger" (虎), it is popular among Hanshin Tigers fans, and in front of the station stands "Tora Shinden" (Tiger Shrine), erected by local volunteers when the team won the championship in 2003.
