History

Kawake Station was first opened on 10 March 1882 by the Japanese Government Railway on the Hokuriku Main Line but closed on 1 May 1886. It reopened on 1 August 1954 as a passenger-only Japanese National Railways station. With JNR's privatization on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR West. When the Nagahama - Sakata section was electrified at DC on 14 September 1991 and its local services changed to electric multiple unit operation, all local trains began stopping at Kawake and its platforms were extended by 15 metres for three-car operation. ICOCA service and new-rapid trains arrived on 21 October 2006 with the Tsuruga - Nagahama DC electrification. Station numbering JR-A07 was introduced on 17 March 2018, and season-ticket sales at the window ended on 30 September 2021.

Notes

Despite serving an area whose adjacent attractions include the ruins of Odani Castle, the station has no footbridge or in-platform level crossing — passengers wanting to change platforms must leave the station entrance and re-enter.
