History

Takaono Station opened as a station on the Ministry of Railways' Sendai Line on 15 October 1923. It was absorbed into the Kagoshima Main Line on 17 October 1927 with the opening of the Yunoura–Minamata section. The wooden station building was demolished and the current station building completed in February 1956. Freight handling ended in September 1961, and with the introduction of CTC in September 1970 the station was placed under contracted operation and put under the management of Izumi Station. It became unstaffed when baggage handling ended in February 1984. It was inherited by JR Kyushu at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and became a Hisatsu Orange Railway Line station with the transfer of the Kagoshima Main Line's Yatsushiro–Sendai section, accompanying the partial opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen, on 13 March 2004. Its station number is OR18. It is a ground-level station with a reinforced-concrete station building and two opposed platforms serving two tracks; it is normally unstaffed, but station staff are posted temporarily during the "Takaono Naka-no-Ichi" market in mid-March each year and the "Takaono Summer Festival" in August.

Notes

The station name "Takaono" derives, as does Tokyo's Takao Station, from a place name meaning "a foothill sloping down from high ground, trailing off like a tail into the plain."
