History

Takamizu Station was established on 28 March 1934 as a provisional terminus when the Ministry of Railways' Gantoku West Line was extended from Suō-Hanaoka Station. On 1 December of the same year the line was extended through to Iwakuni Station (present-day Nishi-Iwakuni) on the Gantoku East Line, and the new line including this station was incorporated into the Sanyo Main Line. On 11 October 1944 the section between Iwakuni and Kushigahama stations was returned to the original Yanai route, and the station came under the Gantoku Line. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1974 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984, and the station became a JR West station at the 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways. It became unstaffed on 1 December 1992.

Notes

The station is the closest stop to the Yashiro district of Shūnan, the only hooded crane wintering ground on Honshū; a crane monument and a glass-cased taxidermied specimen are displayed on the platforms.
