History

Katsuma Station opened on 28 March 1934 as an intermediate stop when the Ministry of Railways extended the Gantoku West Line from Suō-Hanaoka to Takamizu. On 1 December that year the line was incorporated into the San'yō Main Line as the new main line between Marifu (now Iwakuni) and Kushigahama, and the station's affiliation changed with it. On 11 October 1944 the through route reverted to the older alignment via Yanai, after which Katsuma became part of the Gantoku Line. Freight handling ceased on 1 February 1964 and parcel handling on 1 March 1971, after which the station was unstaffed, with tickets sold under a kan'i itaku agreement by a shop in front of the station. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, operation passed to JR West.
