History

Tadanoumi Station opened on 10 July 1932, when the Railway Ministry's San-Go Line (now the Kure Line) was extended between Akisaizaki Station and Takehara Station. It became part of the Kure Line with the full opening of the Mihara–Kaitaichi section on 24 November 1935. The station building was rebuilt in September 1943, freight handling ended in 1982, and baggage handling ended in 1985. It became a JR West station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, with station number JR-Y28. A Midori-no-madoguchi ticket office opened in March 1990 but closed in 2003; from May of that year the station became a simplified-contract station, with a local council taking over station operations, and in March 2004 the current station building, integrated with the welfare facility "Fureai Station Tadanoumi," was completed. In 2016 the ticket window closed, leaving the station effectively unstaffed.

Notes

From Tadanoumi Port, about a five-minute walk from the station, ferries run to Ōkunoshima, an island that housed a poison-gas manufacturing facility before the war and has been known since the war as "Rabbit Island."
