History

Sumiyoshichō Station opened on 10 July 1933 as Nōgakkō-mae ("in front of the agricultural school") on the privately built Chita Railway, which became part of the Meitetsu group on 1 February 1943. The stop was renamed Sumiyoshichō on 1 December 1949. The original building was replaced with an elevated structure on 14 June 1982, when a new footbridge was built and the platforms were lengthened to their present eight-car length. Automatic ticket gates arrived on 26 June 2006, with Tranpass following the next month and Manaca on 11 February 2011. After 90 years of staffed service the station was made fully unstaffed on 1 July 2023.

Notes

Although Sumiyoshichō is not a scheduled limited-express stop, one weekday-morning Kōwa-bound limited express makes a special stop here. Among the Kōwa Line's limited-express and special-stop stations it is the only one not served in the up direction or at weekends and holidays; an evening Nagoya-bound special stop that once existed has since been withdrawn.
