History

Sumiyoshi Station (HN10) is a Hankai Tramway stop in Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka, at the junction of the Hankai and Uemachi lines. Nankai Railway opened a station here as Sumiyoshi-jinja-mae on 1 October 1910 on its new Uemachi Line; Hankai Electric Tramway opened its own Sumiyoshi stop in December 1911. The two merged into one Sumiyoshi stop in 1915 when Nankai absorbed Hankai. Ownership passed to Kintetsu in 1944, then back to Nankai in 1947, before a 1980 spin-off created today's Hankai Tramway. The Uemachi Line's section beyond Sumiyoshi was abolished on 31 January 2016, making the station that line's terminus, though its cars still run through onto the Hankai Line; platforms sit on three sides of the junction.

Notes

The station's building, utility poles, and platform rail posts are among the structures recognized in 2018 as part of a Civil Engineering Heritage listing covering Hankai Tramway's infrastructure as a whole.
