History

Sumiyoshi Station is a tram stop of the Nagasaki Electric Tramway in Nagasaki, Japan, opened on 16 September 1950 as the terminus of a line extension from Ōhashi stop. When the Akasako Branch Line opened on 8 May 1960, Sumiyoshi was relocated and, in practice, became a through-stop rather than a terminus, though it remains the nominal starting point of both lines, which tram routes 1, 2 and 3 all run through. The stop sits in a street-running section, with two low-floor platforms facing each other across the road; in January 2007 its tent-type shelters were rebuilt in a landscape-conscious style. It anchors northern Nagasaki's largest shopping district, with arcades toward the neighboring Showamachidori stop.

Notes

Although the JR line follows the same route as far as Nagasaki Station, the tram's more direct access to central Nagasaki makes it more convenient for passengers, and its ridership consequently exceeds that of the nearby JR Nishiurakami Station.
