History

Sōgo Station opened on 1 April 1962 on the Japanese National Railways' Akō Line between Bizen-Fukukawa and Hinase stations, in what is now the Hinase-chō Sōgo district of Bizen, Okayama Prefecture. It was built as a petition station with construction costs borne entirely by the local community and operated from the outset as an unstaffed halt handling diesel-railcar passengers only. It has a single ground-level platform, one face and one track, on the right-hand side when facing towards Okayama; there is no station building, and because the platform was never raised there is a noticeable height gap between train and platform. The stop passed to JR West on 1 April 1987 with the breakup of JNR, and ICOCA-compatible IC readers were introduced on 15 September 2018. It is the line's easternmost station in Okayama Prefecture.

Notes

The station's Japanese name, 寒河, literally reads "cold river". Sōgo is also where JR West's regional jurisdiction changes: a boundary marker between the Kinki and Chūgoku regional headquarters stands on the section between neighbouring Bizen-Fukukawa and Sōgo, and the line from Sōgo towards Hinase falls under the Chūgoku headquarters — though in operational terms the effective boundary between the two is Banshū-Akō Station.
