History
Shinmachi Station is a Kumamoto City Tram stop operated by the Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau, in Shinmachi 2-chome, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City. It opened on 20 June 1929, though one account holds it was originally named Shinmachi Nichome Station. The name reflects local history: early Edo-period samurai residences near the stop were later relocated east across the Tsuboi River, after which the area was opened as a merchant quarter nicknamed Shinmachi ("new town"), alongside the older Furumachi ("old town"), served today by the tram's A-system. Numbered stop B7, it has two opposing platforms and two tracks, reached directly from the sidewalk and wheelchair accessible. The Kamikumamoto Line's B-system now calls here, with track continuing toward Senbabashi on a dedicated right-of-way.
Notes
The stop lies a short walk from both Nagasaki Jiro Shoten, a bookstore that is a nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property, and Yoshida Shokado, a National Important Cultural Property.
