History

Shin-Maiko Station opened on 18 February 1912 on the Aichi Electric Railway between Tenmachō and Ōno (today's Ōno-machi). Aichi Electric was absorbed by Meitetsu on 1 August 1935, the station building was rebuilt in July 1962, and freight handling ended in fiscal 1967. From 29 January 2005 every limited-express service has stopped here. A new west gate followed in March 2010 and a new east-side building in July 2010. The manaca IC card began on 11 February 2011, Tranpass closed on 29 February 2012, and platform 2 was extended southwards in March 2021 to take eight-car trains. The station became wholly unstaffed on 23 December 2023.

Notes

Shin-Maiko's name comes from comparing the local sandy shore and its sand-control forest to the Maiko area of Kobe; the land on the west side of the station once held a fisheries research facility of Tokyo Imperial University's Faculty of Agriculture, which was opened to the public as an aquarium from May to November each year.
