History

Shin-Fuji Station opened on 25 December 1923 under the Japanese Government Railways as a junction for a private line to Fuji Paper's Kushiro mill, which funded its construction. The name combines "Fuji" (the paper company) with "Shin" ("new"), distinguishing it from the existing Fuji Station on the Tokaido Main Line. JR Hokkaido took over after Japan National Railways' 1987 privatization. It has one island platform on the Nemuro Main Line, flanked by freight tracks and reached by footbridge; JR Freight staff are stationed there but do not handle passenger business, so it is unstaffed for passengers and managed by Kushiro Station. The adjacent freight yard was renamed Kushiro Freight Terminal on 12 March 2011. It serves Kushiro's grain-port industrial district.

Notes

The station's freight yard is Japan's easternmost point with scheduled freight-train departures and arrivals.
