History

Shimo-Yakuno Station opened on 25 October 1911 with the opening of the Railway Bureau's Bantan Line branch between Fukuchiyama and Wadayama, and was transferred to the San'in Main Line on 1 March 1912 when the line names were revised. Freight handling ended on 15 December 1970 and staffing was reduced to daytime hours, with the station moving to simplified-commission status on 1 October 1984. It passed to JR West at privatisation on 1 April 1987. In May 2022 the ticket machine was removed, and in October that year the old station building was demolished and replaced with a basic shelter and benches; daily ridership in fiscal 2023 was 70.

Notes

Shimo-Yakuno keeps a layout that has become rare: its single island platform with two tracks is not laid out as a single-line-through crossing station, so the two faces are divided by direction and even trains that do not stop have to slow down as they pass.
