History

Shiga Station opened on 20 July 1974 as part of the brand-new Kosei Line built by JNR along the western shore of Lake Biwa in Ōtsu, Shiga Prefecture. Operations passed to JR West on 1 April 1987 at the JNR privatisation, and ICOCA card use began in November 2003. The station is configured with two elevated opposed side platforms above a ground-level station building. Until 1969 the Kōjaku Railway ran through the area, and its Ōmi-Kido stop stood on the site of the present station. Station numbering JR-B21 was introduced in March 2018, and the station became unstaffed on 1 September 2025.
