Location
History
Hōrai Station opened on 20 July 1974, together with the opening of the Japanese National Railways' Kosei Line, as an unstaffed, passenger-only station in Ōaza Dōkaitō, Hachiyado, Ōtsu, Shiga Prefecture. It became a station of West Japan Railway Company (JR West) at the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and the IC card "ICOCA" became usable there on 1 November 2003. Station numbering was introduced on 17 March 2018, assigning it JR-B22; its ticket office closed on 31 August 2025, and it became unstaffed all day from 1 September. It is an elevated station with two side platforms serving two tracks, operated as a halt without switches or absolute signals.
Notes
The station name is written using an older character form of "Hōrai," but an extended-shinjitai (simplified) variant of the same characters also appears, mixed in, on fare tables and stopping-station lists outside the station, and complete standardization has not been achieved even within JR West.
