History

Seihō-Kōkō-mae Station opened on 20 January 1959 as the newly established "Kami-Sasa Station" between Hizen-Kanda and Sasa Stations on JNR's Matsuura Line. It became a JR Kyushu Matsuura Line station at the JNR privatization of 1 April 1987, and was converted to the third-sector Matsuura Railway on 1 April 1988, becoming a station on its Nishi-Kyushu Line. Nearby Nagasaki Prefectural Seihō High School represented Nagasaki at the national Kōshien high school baseball tournament for three consecutive seasons from 2005 to 2006, becoming runner-up at the 78th Selection Tournament — a phenomenon known as the "Seihō Whirlwind." In response, in August 2006 the mayor of Sasa requested that Matsuura Railway rename the station, and it was renamed "Seihō-Kōkō-mae Station" in the timetable revision of 18 March 2007. It is an unstaffed station with one side platform and one track, and its waiting room bears a mural painted by Seihō High School students.

Notes

Two years after the renaming, in 2009, Seihō High School's baseball team won the 81st Selection Tournament, achieving the first national championship by a school from Nagasaki Prefecture in either the spring or the summer tournament; the station name became a symbol of the "town-wide support" in which the school's rise and local enthusiasm bore fruit.
