History
Sanuki-Aioi Station opened on 20 March 1935 as a station on the Ministry of Railways' Kōtoku Main Line. Freight handling ended in 1970 and parcel handling in 1972, after which it became an unstaffed station operated under contracted (simplified) staffing. It passed to JR Shikoku at the 1 April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways, and the contracted staffing was later discontinued as well. It is a ground-level station with two opposing side platforms serving two tracks, located in Minamino, Higashikagawa, Kagawa Prefecture, and stands at the Kagawa Prefecture side of the prefectural border; toward Awa-Ōmiya, a grade section crossing Ōsaka Pass continues as the most difficult section on the Kōtoku Line.
Notes
In the steam locomotive era, especially in the immediate postwar period when coal shortages worsened, trains reportedly slowed to a walking pace on the steep grade of Ōsaka Pass, and it is said that residents along the line would jump aboard the slowed trains to avoid paying the fare.
