History

Sakura-machi Station opened on 25 December 1919 as Bungo-machi stop on Nagasaki Electric Tramway's Sakuramachi Line. Renamed Ogawa-machi in 1921, it originally lay near a mountain pass where the line climbed a 40-per-mille grade to a separate, older Sakuramachi stop before descending to Furumachi. Service was suspended after the 1945 atomic bombing and restored in January 1946. In March 1954 the pass segment was abolished, the route was diverted through a cutting, the station relocated, and the old stop closed; the current station finally took the Sakuramachi name in 1966. It today has facing side platforms, rebuilt in 2003, and serves as the closest tram stop to Nagasaki City Hall.

Notes

Because only tram Route 3 calls here, the stop's platform was sometimes closed entirely when that route was suspended after its trams derailed four times between 2007 and 2016 at the neighboring City Hall crossing.
