History
Rokujizō Station opened on 1 June 1913, when Keihan's Uji Line began service between Chūshojima and Uji. It was popularly known as "Rokujizō-san," after Daizen-ji, one of Kyoto's Six Jizō temples, long a site of worship. For about fifty years the site flooded repeatedly: a 1917 flood, the 1934 Muroto and 1961 Second Muroto typhoons, two 1935 Kyoto floods, and typhoons in 1953 and 1965. After the 1953 flood, a Yodo River project raised levees along the Yamashina River and built the Amagase Dam; the station was rebuilt atop the new embankment, completed in 1966, largely ending it. Today it is a ground-level station for five-car trains, fronted by a bus terminal linking to Yamashina, Daigo, and Mikuriyama.
Notes
Keihan applied in 1926 for a license for a branch line, the "Rokujizō Line," from Rokujizō via Daigo to Ōtsu; the license was granted in 1927, but the undertaking was abolished in 1937.
