History
Otai Station is a station on the JR Central Transport Company's Jōhoku Line, located in Hassuji-chō, Nishi-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, which opened on 1 December 1991. The Jōhoku Line was planned under the Railway Construction Act enacted in 1962, and Japanese National Railways (JNR) began construction on it as a freight line in 1976, but the work was suspended due to JNR's financial difficulties; it was later completed as a passenger line, with the section between Katsugawa Station and Owari-Hoshinomiya Station opening on 1 December 1991, and the section between Owari-Hoshinomiya Station and Biwajima Station opening on 18 March 1993. This station sits on an extremely elevated structure that spans over the viaducts of the Meitetsu Inuyama Line and the Nagoya Municipal Subway's Tsurumai Line, with an island platform serving two tracks on the fourth level. Aside from Biwajima Station, it is the only station on the Jōhoku Line equipped with an elevator. No automatic ticket vending machines are installed, and fares are settled on board the train.
Notes
On the Jōhoku Line, the office of the "Railway Department" within the head office of JR Central Transport Company is located close to Otai Station; crew changes take place at this station, and the office also sells commuter passes, coupon tickets, and commemorative tickets.
